Your INTERSTATE motorhome is built to go the distance, inside and out. But like any well-used vehicle, a bit of regular care goes a long way in keeping it looking sharp. Australia’s strong UV conditions can be tough on paintwork, especially on large panels like those found on a van. Without the right upkeep, your exterior can start to look dull or “chalky” over time.
Here’s how to stay on top of it:
1. Wash it like you would your car
Give your INTERSTATE a proper wash every few weeks, or more often if you’ve been near the coast or in dusty inland areas. Use car-safe products and don’t forget the roof, which often gets skipped on motorhomes. Dirt, sap, and bird droppings up top can cause damage if left too long.
2. Polish is your friend
A good-quality polish helps maintain the gloss and offers a layer of protection from the sun. Aim to polish the van every few months, especially after a deep clean or before heading into summer.
3. Consider paint protection
Products like RV Gard or professional paint protection coatings can make a big difference in long-term upkeep. They create a protective layer over your paint, helping resist fading, grime build-up, and UV damage. It’s a great option if you plan to keep your van long-term or use it frequently.
4. Use clay bars or mitts
Clay bars or clay mittens are excellent for removing embedded grime and contaminants that regular washing can miss. They’re a worthwhile step before polishing to make sure the surface is clean and smooth.
5. Look after your vinyl wrap
If your INTERSTATE features a vinyl wrap, it needs slightly different care than painted surfaces. Use mild, non-abrasive cleaners and avoid pressure washers at close range. For full wrap care tips, check out our dedicated guide here:
6. If it starts to chalk, don’t stress
If the exterior starts looking faded or chalky, don’t panic. It’s usually cosmetic and reversible. A proper detail and polish will often bring the finish back to life. Prevention is best, but it’s not the end of the world if you need a refresh.
A bit of elbow grease now and then helps protect your investment and keeps your INTERSTATE looking as good as it feels to drive.
